What is this?



Music to Art:



I few months back I stumbled across this artwork while shopping for jigsaw puzzles. I instantly fell in love with it and felt inspired by it. I wanted to create a piece of music directly inspired by the artwork.

Composing based off visuals is one of my favorite ways to create. When I read the description the artist wrote for the artwork I felt even more inspired.

“I grew up in a small apartment in China and was raised by my grandparents. When I'm not studying or doing homework, I would go into the office/storage room where all the books are kept and flip through all the books about animals.
The photos and illustrations of all the different species always fascinated me and inspired me to learn, understand, and draw the world around me. It gave me a glimpse beyond the rundown apartments and the grey skies of China that I grew up in. Even though the storage room was no bigger than a bathroom, with those books, the walls opened up and the world became boundless.”

I really related to this and reminisced back to my own childhood and how much of my time I spent wrapped up in my own worlds, carried along by an endless sea of imagination.

Musical Analysis. 



The song opens with a synthetic bell instrument playing a constant pattern. This bell represents the monotony of daily life.
The strings that play beneath it are suppressed and hazy.
A marimba and xylophone and some plucked strings interject from time to add some interest to the daily routine, but they are fleeting.


1 minute into the song some woodwinds play a melody which signifies a longing for ‘something more’.
The strings stop playing their subdued chords and begin to swell and build.

At 1:50 a French Horn and Trumpet take up the melody and make it more grandiose. The strings and choir begin to swell even more. This represents sitting down and opening a book.
The bell that represents daily life is now totally covered up as the reader engages in the romance of adventure.

At 2:33 the reader awakens to the sounds of the ocean and realizes that they have been transported to another world created by their imagination. The bell has returned, hesitation and lingering stress, but it begins to play against a marimba part and transforms from the concerns and of daily life into the mystery of this new world.



At 3:18 the reader has forgotten all their concerns and has begun their own soaring adventure fueled by books and imagination. There is no limit to where their mind can take them.

At 5:30, the adventure has concluded and the reader is drifting back down to reality.

By 5:52 the bell of daily life has returned and the last tendrils of imagination are beginning to fade back into a subdued ambience.

Additionally I wanted to pay some respect to the Chinese heritage of the artist by sprinkling different traditional Chinese instruments throughout the song, including: Yangqin, Erhu, Gong/tam tam, Qudi, Yueqin(Moon guitar).
